Plant My Phone

Plant My Phone launches TOMORROW, April 12th!

We've partnered with the Sustainability Council (Ted and Daphne) to bring this program to UChicago. Around campus, there will be locations where you can grab a mailer bag. You can then put an old cellphone that was sitting in a cupboard in the bag and send it off. No postage needed.

Plant My Phone then (hopefully) gets the phone, refurbishes it and/or sells it back to a carrier or distributor, and uses the profit to plant trees.

Even better, for every phone you send in, you get a 1 in 500 chance to win $1,000. Send more phones in, the better chance you get to win the monies. $1,000 can buy a lot of things. Some that come to mind are almost 2 months of rent, a nice TV and a PS3, lots of clothes, and even more ice cream. You pick.

Bags can currently be picked up at these locations:
Max P Central lobby (next to the battery tube and printer cartridge recycling box)
Pierce
South Campus
BSLC
Harper Advisor Hallway (don't forget to meet with your advisor!)
Mitchell Lobby of the hospital

And we're currently looking for other locations, too! So be on the lookout. You can also pick up at the various Earth Week events around campus coming up. Attend the Facebook event here to keep plugged in. And don't forget to steal your friends old phones so you get a better chance of winning the $1,000. :]

We're also competing against other schools. Currently, Tufts is winning with 30. The competition ends in early June. Surely we can get more than 30?

Several GCIers worked pretty hard in 1 week to make this happen. It was literally 10 days ago when we started from scratch. And now, we're getting ready to make it official. Not bad, eh? Huiting e-mailed building managers for permission and flyered.. Shola flyered. Guy flyered and carried around boxes filled with goodies. Joanna flyered and typed up short informational blurbs about bag pick up sites. I flyered, too. Fantastic job, y'all.

Short,
Willy
